Animal Control

The City of Rainier Public Works department handles animal control issues within the city limits. They can be reached Monday - Friday. 8:00am - 4:30pm at (360) 446-2636. For non-emergency situations, leave a voicemail with Public Works and they will respond on the next business day. For emergency situations only, contact Thurston County Sheriff's Office at (360) 704-2740. At this time, the city only handles canine calls.

LOST PETS
If you have lost your pet, we suggest the following:
  • Contact City Hall or Public Works to see if a found dog has been reported. City Hall: (360) 446-2265 Public Works: (360) 446-2636
  • Visit Joint Animal Services' website at jointanimalservices.org to check their photos of found animals. If the animal was found outside city limits, Joint Animal Services will take them to their shelter in Olympia. You can also report lost or found pets on their website. If the pet owner does not have access to the internet, they can call the shelter at (360) 352-2510 for a list of currently housed pets. Note that stray animals that are not claimed after 48 hours in the shelter may be put up for adoption per Washington State law. So, be sure to check daily!
  • Check Facebook lost and found pages, Nextdoor, Ring, and PawBoost. You can also report/post your pet missing on these pages.
  • Put up posters around town that include a picture of the pet, the vicinity of where they went missing, and your contact information. We do not suggest putting your home address on the posters. Be sure to ask permission before posting signs on private property.
FOUND PETS
If you have found a pet, we suggest the following:
  • If you have found an animal within city limits, contact Public Works at (360) 446-2636 to report. If you leave a voicemail, be sure to leave your name and phone number so they can call you back. The city only responds to found dog calls at this time.
  • If the animal was found outside city limits, the city is not able to take the animal. Contact Joint Animal Services at (360) 352-2510.
  • Check Facebook lost and found pages, Nextdoor, Ring, and PawBoost. You can also post the found pet on these sites. We suggest not posting your home address where the dog may be nor specific descriptors of the animal. If the owner reaches out, be sure to have them describe the animals defining characteristics such as collar color, defining spots, etc. This will ensure that the pet will go to the owner and not someone looking for a new pet.
  • Visit Joint Animal Services' website at jointanimalservices.org to check their photos of lost animals. You can post the found animal on their site as well.
  • If able, take the animal to a local veterinary office to scan for a microchip.
DECEASED ANIMALS
If you have found a deceased animal within city limits, contact Public Works at (360) 446-2636 to report. If you leave a voicemail, be sure to leave your name and phone number so they can call you back or the location of the animal. If the animal is found outside city limits, contact Thurston County Public Works at (360) 867-2300.

AGGRESSIVE DOGS
If you encounter an aggressive dog, do not approach. If it is within city limits, contact Public Works at (360) 446-2636 if it is during the hours of 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday-Friday. If it is after hours or outside city limits, contact the Thurston County Sheriff's Office at (360) 704-2740.

To report an incident after the fact, complete the attached form and submit to City Hall in-person or via email at beths@fairpoint.net. We also suggest reporting incidents to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office as well.
